Most of the time these Blind Spot picks I wouldn’t describe as underrated. The whole reason they are blind spots is they have a following whether it be a cult favorite or critical darling they are beloved by many. I’m honestly not sure why I selected the 1992 comedy Housesitter for Blind Spot because it doesn’t really have either of those things but I’m glad I did. What a fun and genuinely underrated rom-com of the 90s.
I had a great time talking about the film with my friend Ryan (see above) and what I think it does well is capturing the energy of the old screwball comedies of the 50s. A hallmark of these rom-coms is a lot of lying. Characters like Goldie Hawn’s in this movie start off with a lie and then keep piling onto it. This leads to a lot of great humor. Not only is there a lie but there is also a fake relationship which is another fun rom-com trope.
My main flaw with Housesitter is the Hawn and Steve Martin never have any chemistry making the ending feel unbelievable. I almost wish they had a little more guts for a subversive ending with them hating each other or making life miserable for each other. That would have been very funny. Still, I enjoyed the ride the film had to offer even without the amazing chemistry.
