Ranking 2015 Animated Films

Hi guys!  I hope you are having a good start to 2016, but let’s look back at the animated films of 2015.  Over all, I’d say it was a pretty good year.  Having not seen Anomalisa I’d say we had 5 films that were excellent, 2, maybe 3, that will make my top 50 animated countdown.  As a point of contrast last year 4 films made the countdown.   I’d also say the bad movies of 2015 weren’t as bad as 2014 so that’s good!

Yesterday I posted my ranking of the animated films of 2015 on my channel and I’m really proud of the how the video turned out.  I was able to use clips and hopefully introduce people to the smaller animated films they may not have heard of.  I have reviewed all of these films on this blog so you are all probably familiar with them but it will hopefully be a good reminder.  I would really appreciate it if you gave this a thumbs up if you like it.  Thanks!

So here’s my ranking of the 2015 animated films (like I said minus Anomalisa which isn’t released yet in my area and I will wait till blu-ray to see)

home-poster14. Home- a muddled story with inconsistent characters hurts a well animated entry from Dreamworks.

strange magic13. Strange Magic- a jukebox musical take on Midsummer’s Night Dream is sunk by a dopey script with uncreative song choices.

minions12. Minions- a side character getting the starring role doesn’t work here.  All over the place story-wise and didn’t make me laugh.

maya the bee1011. Maya the Bee- cute, well animated movie for toddlers with a nice message about being yourself.  A stock Saturday morning cartoon villain without much grown-up appeal but I thought it was cute.

un gallo10. Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos- an animated film with subtitles out of Mexico.  Not perfect but for the $5 million budget I thought it was pretty creative and funny.  A pleasant surprise.

hotel trans29. Hotel Transylvania 2- a pleasant family comedy sequel to the original Hotel Transylvania.  It kind of wimps out on the ending and I miss the ensemble feel of the original but innocuous and fine. The animation is pretty good.

prophet poster8. Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet- the strongest part of this film is the animated shorts that describe the poems of Kahlil Gibran.  They are beautiful but the framing device is very preachy and felt like a Sunday School lesson.

The Spongebob Movie Sponge Out of Water 3D7. Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water- a wacky, somewhat insane movie but I enjoyed it.  The only bone I have to pick with the film is the marketing was deceptive as the ‘out of water’ portion was very brief.  Still, if you want something weird and different give it a watch.

shaun the sheep poster6. Shaun the Sheep- honestly probably my favorite comedy, not just animated comedy, of 2015.  It’s an adorable film that made me laugh with impeccable animation from Aardman.

cheatin poster5. Cheatin’– an adult animated film from Bill Plympton that isn’t for everyone but I found it beautiful and moving.  The artistry alone in the hand drawn sketchy animation should be seen by animation fans.

when marnie94. When Marnie was There- an emotional final film from Studio Ghibli about a family rescuing a girl from deep depression.  The animation is gorgeous and lush and the sound design, music perfection.  I loved it’s bold take on mental illness and it’s a film that really made me think.

good dino233. The Good Dinosaur– an underappreciated entry from Pixar in my opinion.  I loved the relationship between Arlo and Spot and the journey they go on.  I thought it was surprising and sometimes funny, sometimes scary.  And the animation is stunning.

peanuts2. The Peanuts Movie– one of the best adaptations I’ve ever seen.  It was everything I could want in a Peanuts Movie.  It kept it simple and focused on Charlie Brown trying to gain confidence.  I love that.  I loved Snoopy and the Red Baron and all the choices from the music to the amazing hybrid animation.

inside out61.Inside Out– a stunning achievement from Pixar.  I loved this movie and I love it more each time I see it.  I love the dual character arcs with Riley and Joy.  I love Bing Bong and Sadness and the message of the film.  I love the animation and the music and everything else.  It’s perfection!

So there you have it.  My ranking of the 2015 animated films! What would be your ranking?  Put in the comments section and let’s talk about it! And if you see any of these smaller films I’d love to hear what you think.

The Revenant Review

revenant5Yesterday I had the chance to go to an early screening for The Revenant directed by Alejandro Inarritu and it is a tricky film to review.  Inarritu directed last years Birdman, which I happen to think is one of the most overrated films of recent years.  To me The Revenant is a huge step up from that film but your enjoyment of the film will entirely depend on the type of movie you like to watch. So I have come up with some questions so you can decide whether to see the Revenant or not.

1 Do you require likable characters that show humanity to others?

If yes than The Revenant isn’t for you.  In a 156 minute film there is exactly 3 brief moments of humanity- 1. the bond between Hugh Glass and his son,  2. a Native American man who rescues Glass, tends to wounds and makes a shelter.  3. Domhnall Gleason’s Captain Henry is a good, honorable man who trusts people.  All 3 moments don’t end well so they aren’t exactly motivating or encouraging in any way.

revenant3Every other character in the film is a complete beast and the film is unapologetically dismal and gloomy.  Tom Hardy’s Fitzgerald is a complete monster.  He only cares about himself and his own survival.  It’s certainly not the Western hero we used to get from likes of John Wayne.  That’s for sure!   This movie makes Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven look like a birthday party.

reveant332. Do you value striking cinematography particularly of the cold outdoors?

If yes than The Revenant is for you.  The cinematography in the film by Emmanuel Lubezki is unbelievable. Filmed with all natural light the grayness of the cold Montana scenery is magnificent and deadening at the same time.  The water is unbelievable- especially one scene where Glass gets thrown down a rapids in the bitter cold.

I still can’t believe how they got some of the shots.  The story of the brutal filming is near-legend with narrow windows of time with the right lighting to get every take.  They had to move to Argentina eventually because Canada started to warm up!

3. Can you handle gory realistic violence?

If yes than you may find The Revenant exhilarating.  I don’t so a fair amount was tough for me to watch.  I closed my eyes a couple of times.  However, it was so immersive and new that I did find it compelling.   I had prepared myself for the violence so that helped but even then it was brutal.  You could say I pushed myself way out of my comfort zone for this one but it’s good to do that every now and then.

revenant4Much has been said about the bear attack, which is long and shocking.  You watch and wonder ‘how the heck did they do that?’.  I really have no idea! I know they used a combination of a real bear and cg but it was flawless.   As a film fan I love moments in movies I can’t figure out!

Oddly enough the more violent parts I felt were the Indian warfare.  It is relentless in showing person after person get speared with an Indian’s arrow- sometimes through the head, other times completely through the body. I’ve never seen violence quite like that before, and I’m not going to deny it impacted me.   There’s also so much of it.  It goes from the first till the final frame and never gives a moment to breath.

4. Do you need a fast paced film?

revenantIf yes than the Revenant probably isn’t for you.  At 156 minutes it is a slow drip and not that varied in what it is depicting.  We go from Glass getting attacked, getting abandoned, moving around on the ground, finding food, hiding from Indians, stealing a horse, building fires, etc. Basically surviving day after day.  It makes The Martian feel like a joy ride!   There really isn’t one moment of levity or break from the horrors of the West.

5. Is acting more important to you than characters?

revenant2What I mean by this question is Leonardo DiCaprio’s character doesn’t have much to him.  There are a few sequences where he dreams of his wife and a better life but we hardly hear him talk.  He is surviving and it is the elements that have all the character and personality.

That said, it is a tremendous performance and DiCaprio gives it his all and it is hard to not admire that.   The same is true for all the other roles.  Tom Hardy is great.  Domhnall Gleason is great.  Will Poulter is fantastic as Jim Bridger.  But their characters are pretty basic.  So performances great, characters one note.

So if you want to see great actors pour their heart into roles than see The Revenant.

6. Do you want to see something new and different?

Some people like seeing what we already know and recognize. I am certainly one of those people.  I enjoyed traditional reboots such as The Peanuts Movie, Star Wars, Cinderella etc this year but there is something to be said for a film like The Revenant which feels so entirely new and different.

If you can appreciate film as an art and are craving to see an advancement of that art than you must support films like The Revenant.  If you don’t than Hollywood will learn from this year that all that gets people in the seats is the same old, same old.

I love that traditional stuff but love the new stuff where they are trying, experimenting and taking risks.  I will give directors like Inarritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki a bit of a longer leash than normal because it is so bold and daring.   Just the night shots around the fire I was stunned by.  How did they do that using no artificial light?  Amazing.

I realize I didn’t talk much about the movie in those questions but it’s such a simple story there isn’t that much to talk about.  Hugh Glass gets mauled by a bear and left by his fellow pelt hunters to die. The movie is about his survival.

The music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto and Bryce Dessner was also amazing.  It somehow added to the cold with the constant breathing heard in the background.

Here’s the trailer to give you more of an idea.

It’s a really hard film to grade because I can see hating it and loving it.  Parts of me felt both ways.

Overall Grade-  B

Content Grade- F (I can’t overstate how gory and brutal this movie it is.  Not for the faint of heart).

My 5 Favorite Dreamworks Films

Today I posted on my youtube channel a video collaboration I was fortunate to do with fellow youtuber blu-ray Benn.  With Kung fu Panda 3 coming out later this month we thought it would be fun to talk about our favorite Dreamworks films.  A lot of people think I hate Dreamworks but it’s really just the Shrek movies aren’t my favorite (have yet to see the Madagascar movies which don’t appeal to me).  So it is more their comedies but I do enjoy the studio.

Here are my top 5 Dreamworks films:

Here are Blu-ray Benn top 5.  Give his video a thumbs up!

What do you think of our lists and what are your top 5?

Good and Bad of Women in Film in 2015

woman in 2015

Spoiler warning for Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens below.

The other day my blogging friend Mark at Fast Film Reviews posted his Best Films of 2015.  What stood out to me most is that each of his 10 favorite films had a strong female presence in the film.  This is a remarkable feat that wouldn’t have been possible most years.  I’m not exaggerating when I say Meryl Streep has gotten as many nominations as she has not only because she is a great actresses but because literally some years there weren’t many strong female roles to pick from.  Even studios I love like Pixar have had few female roles.  Often you will have the token woman lead in a series dominated by male characters (Star Wars 1-6 definitely fit this camp).

I’m not saying I liked all of the female driven films of 2015.  Of course I didn’t.  Woman in Gold bored me silly and I hated Suffragette.  But I think it is a good thing we have good, bad, in-between movies about women, just like we have them about men!   If you will notice in my graphic all of the female performances were white women so that is something that could change but bravo to see half the human population represented in this storytelling device we call movies!  We’ve had female driven comedies, dramas, post-apocalyptic stories, classics, animation, teenage movies, science fiction and space opera (and I realized I forgot to include Hunger Games in the graphic!).

Unfortunately, the jury is still out as to whether this is an anomaly or a lasting trend.  2016 is very heavy in superhero movies (8 in one year!) and we will see how they do with Wonder Woman but not very optimistic on that front.  Of course, we have the female cast Ghostbusters which will be a very interesting to see how that plays out.  I am sure no matter how good it is there will be idiots who complain about the casting gimmick, but I just want to see the movie!

That’s where we get to the bad of this great year for women in film.  We unfortunately have gotten the complaining from corners who don’t want to see progression in characters and representation on screen.  Yes, if casting a female in a part is just to be politically correct than you have a point.  Part of the problem with Princess and the Frog is Disney was too concerned with both representing and placating an African American audience.  They made story changes, altered characters and ended up with kind of a muddled movie (not terrible but not as strong as it could have been).  Same thing when they tried to not offend the catholic church with Hunchback of Notre Dame.  Changing Frollo to a judge actually made the church look worse as the institution, not just a lone bishop, is enabling a mad man raise a child and not doing anything to stop the horrible behavior and manipulation.

So yes, Hollywood is a business and if they can follow a trend of female based movies, they will do it.  If it stops being the trend than they will stop doing it.  I repeat- it’s a business.  They want to make money! So of course after a big hit like Hunger Games we have seen many strong women in the movies.

Here’s the bad side of the trend, all the trolling and moronic comments that have resulted. This is particularly true with Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The complaints for both films really irritate me.

This photo provided by Warner Bros. Pictures shows Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ action adventure film, “Mad Max: Fury Road," a Warner Bros. Pictures release. (Jasin Boland/Warner Bros. Pictures via AP)

First of all, Max Max: Fury Road is criticized because Furiosa is basically the lead of the film rather than Mad Max.  I’m no expert on the Mad Max franchise but wasn’t Max always kind of secondary to the environment and world around him?  Is he really that much of a dynamic character? Isn’t he pretty much an excuse to have great action set pieces and a fun gritty story? So why does it matter that in this case the world around him is a strong woman?  And isn’t every scene Furiosa in Max also in except for the very beginning when she begins her drive?

To me it makes sense in a post-apocalyptic world that women would be both prized for their sex and fertility and also have to be incredibly tough to survive.  Furiosa’s character is not only that but she is angry and really a revolutionary with her stealing Joe’s wives.  Of course she is a tough woman.  She would be slaughtered in the first 15 minutes of the movie if she wasn’t!  There is also never a moment of traditional ‘girl power’ in the movie.  For instance, she just shoots the giant gun.  She doesn’t say something girl powery like ‘that’s how ladies get it done’.  She just does it, just like Max does it.

Neither Max or Furiosa have any dialogue so why her character annoys people more than his is beyond me?  They are both characters that are fighting a post-apocalyptic battle on cars.  It’s as simple as that.

It will be interesting to see where the story goes in the next movie but for the one we got, in the genre it was trying to be in, Furiosa was awesome.

rey2

Ok.  Let’s tackle Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  In the film we get a new lead character Rey played by Daisy Ridley.  She is a scavenger who is waiting for her family to come back after they left her on a desert planet named Jakku.  As a scavenger she learns about machines and she says she has experience as a pilot.  She identifies herself as a pilot from the beginning.  Poe Dameron also identifies himself as a pilot. Nobody has any problem with that…

So, Rey flies the Millennium Falcon and she is by no means perfect in the flight.  She bounces around a bit and is on the run most of the time.  Through some clever thinking, more than brilliant flying she evades the tie-fighters. When it is over Finn asks her ‘how did you do that?’.  She says something like “I don’t know.  We trained but never left the planet”.  She’s clearly a character that operates well on extreme adrenalin and she has force abilities that are awakened through the course of the movie.

If you think about it she makes a poor decision under less adrenalin when changing the fuses in the scenes with the rathgars.   Also for someone who has only been trained on blasters Finn adapts to the Tie-Fighter and Falcon pretty easily.  He also knows where to go to turn off the shields and is able to make his way to Captain Phasma and capture her without disturbing anyone else on the ship.  For a guy in sanitation that was simple for him? Yet I don’t see anyone complaining about his character or that he is a Gary Stu?

She is also different than Luke because Luke was a doubter.  It took him forever to believe in the force and its power and be confident in using it.  Really not until Return of the Jedi is he confident.  Yoda tells him “that is why you fail” because his lack of faith in the force and his own abilities are his biggest problem.  I mean if you really think about it Luke had never really piloted much before and yet he does a darn good job in those missions at the end of New Hope.  Nobody complains about that.  If Luke hadn’t been bogged down by self-doubt than he probably would have been able to do everything that Rey does.  People accept things at different rates.  Rey is a believer and therefore she uses the force more quickly than Luke did.

Now there is one moment in the film where Rey changes a stormtrooper’s mind and this idea comes to her seemingly out of nowhere.  Although humorous, this could have been handled better, but to call into question the entire character and claim she is a Mary Sue because of it, is just ridiculous.

The final battle between her and Kylo is also a point of contention.  In this scene Kylo is injured, and injured so badly a significant amount of blood has come through his clothing to drip onto the ground.  That’s no small injury.  He also shows at the beginning that he can throw her against the tree.

But then her confidence grows as the fight continues.  She’s just seen Finn hurt, possibly dead, Han is dead,  and she fights with a ferocity we don’t often see in Star Wars.  But she is still on the defense for most of the fight.  Then we get to the point where he has her on the edge of a ravine and she hears the words of Maz Kanata about the force.  This gives her the strength to tackle an INJURED Kylo Renn.

the-princess-bride-the-princess-bride-4546832-1280-720If you think about action scenes in other classic movies things are far easier for the male heroes than they are for Rey in Force Awakens, and yet I don’t hear complaints of Mary Sue or Gary Stu.  The Princess  Bride for instance- a movie I love by the way.  Yes, Wesley is a pirate but does it make sense he would be smarter than a deep thinker, stronger than a giant and a better swordsman than a man who trained all his life to avenge his father’s death?  No.  Of course it doesn’t but it’s a live action fairytale with a sense of humor to it.  I want in my Princess Bride movie for the hero to dominate and have quippy dialogue.  (Another movie with the token woman and almost all the rest men).

You can make a similar argument about Indiana Jones finding clues in  minutes scores of people are researching and digging for.  I have never heard anyone claim he is a bad character.  Even if they hate the last movie they still like the character.  What about the Goonies?  People love that movie but it is about kids finding treasure underneath a major city (all the goonies by the way are nearly all boys!). You going to tell me it makes sense that generations of people weren’t able to find those caverns and treasure when a couple of kids are able too?  Indiana Jones and Goonies are great movies because they work within the genres they are given and have good scripts.

Star Wars movies are meant to be exciting, fun, space operas.  They aren’t supposed to be gritty depictions of realistic warfare.  The character arcs are pretty simple but we love it for that very reason.  The problem with the prequels is the characters got muddled and made poor decisions (with dopey dialogue too).  The fact is Rey is a character with confidence who acts well under adversity. For the life of me I don’t know what’s wrong with that?

Mad Max is a kinetic crazy battle film.  Furiosa is a strong character who is in nearly every scene with Max and they fight the bad guys.  It’s as simple as that.

So, to those complaining about Star Wars and Mad Max, I can see having issues with individual scenes in the film, as do I, but to fault the movie for Furiosa and Rey I do not get.  Those are terrific characters that fit within the genre of movie they are in.  I’m sorry if their presence annoys you but again grow up!  If you don’t like the movies.  Fine.  But stop with the Mary Sue and the feminists are taking over our movies nonsense.

That’s what I have to say about that!  Let’s just hope that Wonder Woman is 1/10th the character Furiosa and Rey were.  A girl can dream right?

Talking Star Wars: Force Awakens

Hi guys!  You all know I loved the new Star Wars movie The Force Awakens.  It ended up my second favorite movie of the year after Inside Out.

On Sunday my friends Abby and Jeremy and I continued our Star Wars analysis by talking all about the new film.  We ended up talking for 2 hours and we could have gone even longer! For a movie that seems simple on the surface there is a surprising amount to it.

I think this would be an entertaining listen for you when you are cleaning or working, maybe on your commute.  I would love your feedback.

You can listen to our discussion on the entire series with this playlist.

I loved doing these discussions and feel encouraged to do more of them.  Abby and Jeremy also said they had a good time.  If you have suggestions you’d like to us to discuss put in the comments section.  I was thinking of the Marvel movies or Harry Potter later in the year.

Congrats to JJ Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy, and the team at Disney/Lucasfilm for making a very special movie!  And thanks to George Lucas for creating such a wonderful world.  I appreciate even his prequels now better after this series and watching them in chronological order.  It’s been a great experience so I hope you all enjoy listening to it.

2016 Blindspot Choices

My friends over at Cinema Parrot Disco and Keith and the Movies have introduced me to the Blindspot series.  This is where as bloggers we fess up to 12 movies we haven’t seen that are considered classics.  Then we watch one of those movies each month for the year.  I have decided to participate this year and these are my 12 choices.  Let me know what you think of all of these films.

January- Blade Runner

I’m actually going to see it on the big screen in a rerelease.  Ridley Scott’s dystopian futuristic film is a classic I can’t wait to see!

blade runnerFebruary- Ghost in the Shell

Another anime to cross off my list.  This futuristic anime is about a Motoko Kusanagi tracking down a hacker known as the Puppet Master.  It should be interesting to watch with the live action version coming in March

iaccarino-ghost-in-the-shellMarch- Dark Knight Rises

Yes, I haven’t seen the 3rd in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.  The truth is I’m not that big a fan of Batman movies and didn’t love Dark Knight as much as most people.  In honor of Batman v Superman will give the trilogy another go and finally watch the 3rd offering.

dark-knight-rises-posterApril- Yentl

One of few Barbara Streisand films I haven’t seen and April seems like a good fit for this film.

yentlMay- The Jerk

I want to have some laughs during the series so let’s enjoy Steve Martin being The Jerk!

the jerkJune- Tales from Earthsea

Another Studio Ghibli to cross off the Must See list.  This is one of Hayao Miyazaki’s first films and I look forward to seeing it.

tales_from_earthsea_movie_poster_01July- Talk to Her

Directed by Pedro Almodovar Talk to Her is the stirring story of 2 men who become friends when their significant others are in comas. It’s a foreign film I’ve had on Must See List for some time

Talk_to_Her_English_movie_poster_fairuseAugust- Porco Rosso

Another Studio Ghibli to cross off the list.  This one looks very fun and different.  I mean a pilot pig.  How can you go wrong with that!

Porco Rosso (1992) 1September- 400 Blows

The debut film by Francois Truffaut is a must see for any cinemaphile, so I look forward to watching it.  It’s about a boy in France who is unhappy and causing all kinds of trouble.

400 blowsOctober- Unbreakable

Let’s give a ‘good’  M Night Shyamalan movie a shot.  I’ve heard Unbreakable is a terrific superhero/thriller movie and I will have an open mind.  I do like Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense and think Signs is well made.

unbreakableNovember- Looper

To get ready for Rian Johnson’s helming of Star Wars Episode 8 I will watch his time travel film Looper.  I love time travel movies and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt is one of my favorite actors.  Bruce Willis I am more hit and miss on but he can be very good.

looperDecember- The Ref

Just in time for Christmas let’s join Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey in The Ref.  Evidently Leary is a thief who ends up ‘refereeing’ in Spacey and Davis’ marriage.

the refSo that is my Blindspot picks for 2016.  Let me know what you think!

Family Movie Night: Song of the Sea

This week on my family movie night video I put another plug for you all to see Song of the Sea.

I can’t say enough good things about this film.  It’s still the best movie I’ve seen all year including Inside Out.  In my opinion Song of the Sea is a true new masterpiece and I love it more each time I see it.  It’s emotional, peaceful, tense, sweet, scary and everything else.  The journey that Ben takes in dealing with the loss of his Mother is engrossing and devastating at times.  There is magic and unexpected characters and the animation is stunning.

Please watch it!!!  It is available as a free stream if you are an amazon prime member.

Have you seen it?  What did you think?

The music by Bruno Calais and Kila is so moving as well.  I have the soundtrack and enjoy listening to it throughout the day.  It has a calming effect over me.

What would you say is a new masterpiece released in the last 3 or 4 years.  I would put last year’s Boyhood in that discussion and Inside Out would be on the short list.

Best of 2015 Animated Shorts

Hi guys!  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday.  This week I am going to be sharing my ranking for the 2015 animated films but before that I wanted to talk animated shorts!  I love animated shorts and 2015 was actually a really terrific year for the medium.  I haven’t seen all of them as they aren’t all available but I watched a lot and I came up with my top 11.  I worked really hard on this video and would love if you gave it a watch.

But if you don’t want to watch the video I will give the list here.  I did include shorts from anthology films like The Prophet and Extraordinary Tales because I feel they stand on their own as shorts without needing the framing device.  In fact, they are much better without it.

So here are my top 11 2015 animated shorts

11. Frozen Fever

frozen fever5Yep, this die hard Frozen fan puts Frozen Fever at 11 because it is sweet and pleasant but not as artistically ambitious as the others on this list.  Frozen fans like myself will really enjoy seeing Anna and Elsa’s relationship grow and the new song is very enjoyable but it isn’t spectacular or anything.  Just really enjoyable for fans and there is nothing wrong with that.

10. A Bear’s Story

shorts 2015 bears10This animated short from Gabriel Osorio and it has a bit of a steampunk feel (shorts are the best place for steampunk IMO) about a bear that makes pictograph machines with a mechanical version of his family.  It reminded me a lot of Hugo and was very sweet and beautiful.

9. Lava

lava2I’m sure you guys are shocked this isn’t higher but when it came down to it the 8 shorts were more artistically ambitious than Lava.  I love Lava!  I love the music.  The song I have been singing all year and nearly anything with Hawaii has my heart but I just couldn’t get it higher.  It’s a delightful, sweet short.

8. An Object at Rest

shorts 2015 object5Similar to Lava, An Object at Rest tells the story of a mountain, that becomes a boulder, that becomes a stone, and continues on.  It is animated by Seth Boyden and it has a sketchy sweet style like Ernest and Celestine.

7. Le Gouffre

le gouffreThis short was a big surprise for me but it is beautiful.  It is about 2 adventurers that have to cross a chasm and build a bridge to get to the other side.  It sounds mundane but it is exciting and striking with great character designs.  It is from a studio out of Montreal called Lightning Bay Studio and it makes me very curious to see what the studio will do next.

6. On Eating and Drinking

Plympton_ProphetThis short is from The Prophet by amazing animator Bill Plympton who does all his artwork by hand and I love his sketchy style.  (Check out this year’s Cheatin’ to see more of his style).  This is a poem about eating and drinking and the imagery and flow with the poem are beautiful.

5. The Tell-Tale Heart

extraordinary tales8From the Edgar Allen Poe anthology film Extraordinary Tales we get the depiction of Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart.  The art design with the black and white contrasting is really striking and Bella Legosi narrating gave great ambiance and immersed me in the story.

4. World of Tomorrow

shorts 2015 world of tomorrow5I wouldn’t be surprised if after watching it a dozen more times World of Tomorrow is at the top of my list.  It’s very obtuse and out there but I was intrigued by it.  Created by animated Don Hertzfeldt it is basically the animated sci-fi musings of a leader and a little girl.  It’s trippy and weird and different but I liked it for those reasons.

3. On Work

prophet on workThis short from The Prophet reminded me of a Van Gogh painting with the harvesters collecting the wheat from the field.  The poem was beautiful and the animation fit it perfectly.  It is bright and vivid and I loved it.

2. Sanjay’s Super Teamsanjay4I loved this story from Pixar about a little boy and a father trying to reconcile their differing views of the world.  You have little Sanjay who loves superheroes and his Dad who worships and prays to the Hindi Gods.  It’s not about polytheism or superheroes but about how we can take the best of the old and new and make something unique and great. The animation is bright, colorful and very creative.

1.  On Love

shorts 2015 on loveIf you haven’t caught on I am kind of obsessed with Tomm Moore.  His animation is so beautiful.  I loved Song of the Sea- one of my favorite animated films of all time and I think Secret of the Kells is wonderful.  Naturally, his short in The Prophet was my favorite of the group and of the year.  It is called On Love and is of course about love.  We get joy, passion, rejection, and belonging perfectly animated with the Khalil Gibran poem accompanying the stirring images.

So that is my ranking.  What do you think about my picks and what are your favorite animated shorts from the year?  I hopefully introduced you to a few you haven’t heard of and I would encourage you to check them out.

I know there are many I missed so please put in the comments section.  Thanks!
