Love the Coopers Review

love the coopers7Today I had the opportunity to go to an early screening for the new Christmas film Love the Coopers.  It’s the kind of movie which is difficult to review because I can’t really defend it yet I didn’t hate it either.  I am positive critics will savage this film and perhaps it is just my penchant for cheesy Christmas movies on TV from Hallmark or Lifetime that allows me to say I had an okay time watching this movie.

Love the Coopers is a story we’ve seen a million times in everything from National Lampoons Christmas Vacation to the Family Stone.  It’s about a big family with parents (John Goodman, Diane Keaton) trying to host the perfect Christmas for their kids or everything will be ruined. Goodman and Keaton have no chemistry and their story arc isn’t believable at all.

love the coopers3Then you have the eccentric cast of characters that all get into hijinks:

love the coopers5You have:

Ed Helms as a down on his luck divorced Dad looking for a job so he can get the presents for his kids.

Alan Arkin as a sweet man and grandpa who has developed a friendship with a young waitress played by Amanda Seyfried (I liked their scenes until the last 20 minutes or so and then it gets weird).  I wonder if his character will have some kind of medical episode that will remind everyone what Christmas is all about?…

Olivia Wilde and Jake Lacy have a meet cute at an airport where she gets him to pretend to be her fiance (groan…) because she doesn’t want to hear grief from her parents on her life choices.

June Squibb is the goofy Aunt Fishy and then several kids with stories of their own.

The worst plotline was with Marisa Tomei as the old maid who attempts to shoplift a piece of jewelry for her sister (Diane Keaton) and she ends up doing psychotherapy on the arresting officer in what seemed like the longest drive to whatever precinct they were going too.  It annoys  me in films when therapy and especially something as complex as this man is evidently going through is whittled down to a few epitaphs and expressions.

love the coopers4So now it seems like I hated the movie.  I didn’t.  I can’t even explain why I was moderately entertained by all this ridiculousness.  Call it escapist entertainment if you will but I suppose we all have our genres that we will accept a lot of nonsense. Cheesy Christmas movies is mine.

love the coopers2I suppose perhaps part of it is that I see the hijinks that happen in my own family and the drama and I think if that was made into a movie it wouldn’t look that different.   There’s just something about the holidays that invites that kind of sentimentality and fluffy storytelling.  I mean seriously when was the last great emotional holiday film? I wish this was good a family drama as say Dan in Real Life but I bought most of it.

Steve Martin does the voice-over narration for the film, which I actually liked and I thought a lot of the dialogue  wasn’t half bad (except for the Tomei section.  That was awful).  The performers are all trying and it definitely looks nice.

love the coopersI took one thing from the script that I have been pondering.  I’m not sure who said it but someone says “the problem with the holidays is we try to schedule happiness.  That might work for kids but not adults”.  I think that is so true.  I love the holidays.  I love decorating the tree, making treats, buying gifts, being with loved ones.  However, I do sometimes leave things feeling a little bit let down.  It’s like I am anticipating magic when magic  can’t be planned. Last year I spent Christmas mostly by myself, which was a little bit sad.  I had family at Christmas Eve and went to a friends for brunch but most of the holiday I was alone.  It was hard but in a way it was a relief.  None of the pressure of being with family and being single at Christmas.  It could just be an ordinary day and I could think about all I have to be thankful for. I don’t know if that makes sense but I liked that thought of the holidays trying to ‘schedule happiness’.

So,  Love the Coopers isn’t a good movie but I still had an ok time watching it.  It’s as simple as that.

Aside from some very bad teenage kissing (intentionally so for ‘jokes’) there really isn’t anything to offend people.  I was a little annoyed how they make the conservative army guy such an outsider.  Only insane people believe such things! Sigh…but this is basically a Hallmark movie as far as content goes.

I did like the way it used non-Christmas music in the soundtrack in interesting ways.

It’s basically a Hallmark movie in every way except for higher caliber of actors. So if you like that kind of holiday film than give this a go.  If it sounds awful I guarantee you will hate it.

Star Wars Ep 3: Revenge of the Sith Review and Discussion

Hi guys!  So we just finished the third in our review and discussion of the Star Wars films with our look at Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.  This is definitely the strongest of the prequels and we had a great time talking about it.

PLOT-

Episode 3 starts out with war between the Republic and the Separatists. Obi-won and Anakin lead a rescue of Chancellor Palpatine from General Grevious. They confront Count Dooku who Anakin kills at Palpatine’s urging. Later on Coruscant Padme announces to Anakin that she is pregnant. Anakin is happy over the news but also worried because of the rules against Jedi loving. Anakin also becomes worried when he has dreams of Padme dying while giving birth.

Anakin is angry when the Jedi Council decide against making him a Jedi Master. Palpatine feels he will be able to manipulate Anakin and he goads his ego and tells him about the power of the dark side to possibly overcome death. He then tells Anakin that he is the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. Anakin tells Mace Windu this who then confronts Palpatine. The two fight and Palpatine is nearly defeated but Anakin decides he needs to know how to save Padme so he stops Windu who then Palpatine kills. After this Anakin pledges with the dark side and is named Darth Vader.

Obi-won kills Grevious. Then Palpatine changes the orders of the Clone army using order 66 to kill the Jedis and Anakin is sent to the Jedi Temple and he oversee’s all Jedi’s even children in training are killed. The only survivors are Obi-wan and Yoda. Vader then kills the Separatist leaders on the volcanic planet Mustafar while Palpatine convinces the Senate to change from a Republic to a Galactic Empire. Padme hears of Anakin’s betrayal and goes with Obi-wan to Mustafar. Vader feels Padme has betrayed him by continuing to associate with Obi-wan and he force chokes her and she collapses. Obi-won and Vader have a light saber battle over the lava. Obi-wan severs Vader’s limbs and he is burned in the lava.

Meanwhile, Yoda battles Palpatine with the light saber and other methods but ends up escaping. Padme has twins Luke and Leia before dying. Palpatine creates a body and respiratory mask for Vader so that he can go on living creating the iconic Darth Vader we know. Obi-wan and Yoda hide the twins, Leia with Senator Organa in Alderaan and Luke with his uncle Owen in Tatooine.

THOUGHTS-

As I say in the video, my main response to Revenge of the Sith was ‘meh’.  It’s not terrible but I didn’t love it either.  It was ok but that’s a big improvement over 1 and 2.

There are a couple of reasons this one works better than the other 2.  First of all, there is actually a story with a climax that matters and villains that are menacing.  Everything in this film is leading up to the creation of Darth Vader so it gives it some momentum and excitement we didn’t get in the others.  Second, there is way less dialogue in Revenge of the Sith than the other prequels, which is a good thing because George  Lucas isn’t great at writing dialogue.  Finally, the special effects are better and more convincing than previous endeavors.

I felt like they tried to remove a lot of the stuff people hated in episode 2.  We get way less awkward romantic dialogue.  We get way less political talk and we even lose the villain of Episode 2 right away, which really surprised me.  Ian McDiarmid also gets to shine as Emperor Palpatine as he becomes the Emperor we know in the original trilogy.

I did think Anakin’s transformation to Darth Vader was somewhat sudden but I didn’t hate it either.  I was annoyed by Padme becoming basically a Bella Swan type waiting and adoring needy woman and kind of giving up in the end.

I also found the plot to be very confusing and didn’t like General Grevious as a character.  I wish they had just kept Count Dooku who I think was much better than Grevious.

The Order 66 and the change of the Clones to kill the Jedi was very sad and compelling especially having watched Star Wars Rebels and seeing some of that aftermath.

There’s lots of light saber battles in this film and I enjoyed most of them even if they are a little bit cheesy special effects-wise.  I’m still not a fan of Yoda using a light saber and that whole section but the Vader/Obi-wan battle lava aside looks pretty cool.

The final creation of Darth Vader is good but I didn’t like the No at the end especially because Lucas put it in Return of the Jedi at the end.

Overall, I still had problems with Revenge of the Sith in acting, a confusing plot and some character jumps that don’t quite make sense.  That said, I was entertained and found it much  more entertaining than Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones.

I am very excited to get to Episode 4: New Hope which is my personal favorite Star Wars film even though I admit Empire Strikes Back is the better made film.  It’s going to be fun to discuss the 3 original trilogy and then Force Awakens!

What do you think about Revenge of the Sith?  Put your comments down below.  Thanks!

Peanuts Movie Review

peanutsI tell you guys I am happy, happy, happy right now!  I just got back from seeing The Peanuts Movie and I LOVED it!

I went into Peanuts a little skeptical.  I love the comics and the shorts that have come out over the years especially Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown Christmas Special.  The thing I love most is the character of Charlie Brown and how he is thoughtful and even depressed at times.  There’s something about that which makes him very relatable and easy to root for.

I guess he is the classic underdog who we all like and a lot of the times he speaks the truth whether it is about materialism at Christmas or the difficulty making friends.  I was worried this  quality of Peanuts would get lost.  I was particularly worried when Blue Sky was the studio involved and when they decided to go the CG route instead of the hand drawn of the shorts. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the trailer so I was nervous walking into the theater.

But I’m telling you they pulled it off.  This film is a complete delight.  I can’t say enough good things about it.

peanuts9Let’s talk about the animation first.  It feels like a hybrid animation like we got in Paperman or Feast.  I saw it in 3D and it looked multi-dimensional but also paper thin, so it had both a 2D and CG look to it.  Mostly it felt like layers and bold colors to the characters we know and love.

It’s so pleasant to look at and the character design down to the squiggly lines of the smiles was perfect while still having it’s own new look. The scenes with Snoopy, Woodstock and the Red Baron looked bright and wistful, like right out of a comic strip or book.

They also got the voice work perfectly without any of the celebrity voices that can be distracting in films like Home.  These are the voices we know from the original shorts.

peanuts7The story is very simple.  It is basically about how Charlie Brown wants to win the attention of a new red-headed girl but he lacks the confidence he needs to even talk to her.  He gets some advice from Lucy and decides he wants to be a winner.

peanuts3On the way he experiences some really sincere and lovely moments of both triumph and success.  They got the tone just right in this movie and I was always hopeful and filled with joy even as Charlie Brown was struggling.

peanuts4The jokes all worked and the kids in my audience were cracking up (and I was too!).  There is absolutely nothing offensive in this film.  It is G rated and deserves a G rating.  You can take any age of kids and I think they will be entertained even small toddlers I think will like it.

I loved the world of the characters.  These are no cell phones or laptops.  These are kids that have to go to the library to look something up, go skating on snow days and participate in school talent shows for fun.  It all felt so innocent and charming. You can tell they had the influence of producers and screenwriters Craig and Bryan Schulz (Charles Schulz’s son and grandson) involved creating a story that will satisfy new viewers and longtime fans.

peanuts1113

They have a few songs from Flo Rida, Meghan Trainor but you also get the classic Vince Guaraldi numbers from Charlie Brown Christmas Special and the Christophe Beck score uses Guaraldi as an influence.  Jazz pianist David Benoit helps add to the authentic feel of the score.

Over all, I was completely delighted by this film.  I really don’t have anything negative to say. I guess if you are looking for something new and challenging than this isn’t the film for you.  We got that in Inside Out, which I still think is the better film, but I really did love this film.  They had such a tough task in front of them and congrats Blue Sky!  You pulled it off!

Here’s my youtube review.

Overall Grade- A+ Definitely one of best of year.

Spectre Review

spectreSpectre is an interesting film to review because it succeeds at being what most of the 24 Bond films are but it fails at being what in my opinion the two best Bonds films , Casino Royale and Skyfall were- emotionally compelling.  It’s a solid Bond movie but it just doesn’t have that layer of complexity the earlier films in the Daniel Craig Bond films did. To me at least those films succeeded because Bond felt like a real person with emotions and feelings, which made the action much more engrossing because it was happening to someone I actually cared about.

Most Bond movies aren’t so rich but are silly action movies with quippy one liners, cool gadgets, ridiculous stunts and beautiful women.  You get all of that in Spectre but I was a little let down by Sam Mendes’ latest offering because I wanted more than that.  The previous movies spoiled me!  (In fact, I picked Casino Royale as my action movie choice to introduce someone to film in this fun post here)

spectre5In Spectre we even get the martini shaken not stirred line when in Casino Royale he is asked that and says ‘Do I look like I give a d…”  I prefer the previous but I guess it makes sense when Casino Royale was supposed to be a prequel or an origin story for Bond.  I suppose he has been growing into the agent we saw in earlier incarnations of the character.  Too bad…

But that said, let’s talk about the movie we did get, not the movie I wanted.  The plot to Spectre is very similar to Mission Impossible 5.  The movie starts out with a dynamite sequence in Mexico City during a Day of the Dead celebration.  The action is terrific with sweeping pan shots and a helicopter fight scene that blew my mind.

spectre2James Bond is hunting down a secret organization called Spectre from a clue that he found from the M played by Judi Dench in previous films.  When he returns to London the 00 organization is being merged wtih MI6 and the new M played by Ralph Fiennes is having to deal with C played by Andrew Scott who Sherlock fans will recognize. I liked them both in their roles

spectre7 spectre9James is supposed to stay in London but through the help of Q and his cars and gadgets (more of that kind of thing in this than the previous films) he makes it to Europe and then South Africa to investigate the Spectre.

Q played by Ben Whishaw

Along the way James meets a woman named Lucia played by Monica Bellucci and  then the main Bond girl Dr Madeleine Swann played by Lea Seydoux.  They are all fine but again the typical old school Bond girl, nothing more. There’s nobody even close to Rebeca Ferguson in MI-5.

spectre4The villains are a big disappointment.  So far I have yet to see a great Christoph Waltz performance (his Tarantino films are too violent for me) but it really isn’t his fault here.  He is off screen for most of the movie and when he was there it was a standard campy Bond villain with elaborate ways to kill people instead of just shooting them.  There’s also one of those old school Die Hard style bombs with the digital read out.  Are those ever going to go away?  spectre6Dave Bautista literally says one word and is the more predominant force trying to stop Bond.  They do have an amazing fight sequence on a train so that was entertaining but hard to feel bonded to a villain who doesn’t talk.

There were times when I got a little bit bored and like in MI-5 there are a lot of plotholes and moments where you scratch your head wondering ‘how did they get here? How did they know to go here? How did they survive that?”  Perhaps that wouldn’t bother me if this hadn’t been the 7th movie this year asking me to take such silly action leaps and again the previous films were so good! Sigh…

Anyway, Spectre is what it is.  It’s an old school Bond movie with some good action, some silly banter and beautiful women.  If that’s your thing than you’ll probably like it.  If you are hoping for a little more depth than you might be disappointed.

As far as content there is some sensuality in two scenes and a lot of over the top action and fighting.  Minimal profanity so base your viewing of the film on how offensive you find the Pierce Brosnan or Timothy Dalton Bond films.

Also the score by Thomas Newman felt very old school Bond as well.

Overall Grade- C+ (which I remind you a C+ means I thought it was slightly above average)

My Dream Pixar Pitches

Today I was talking with a friend on twitter about Cars 3 and how we hoped it would be something that the Cars 2 haters couldn’t deny it was a quality film.  I have a feeling part of the reason they want to do the project is to prove the doubters wrong and make something great. I could be totally wrong about that but I still think it would be awesome if it is a good film.

Anyway, I told him what my pitch for Cars 3 would be if the Pixar brain trust asked.  Clearly they are already in development and working on it so I’m not being realistic here.  But it just gave me the idea and got me thinking- if it was just me what would I want to see as a continuation for the Pixar properties?

This is all in fun but here’s what I would pitch.

cars2-6Cars 3-

I’ve always thought a problem with the Cars and Planes world is there are no robots.  There has to be robots to put things together or at least repair things.  In 2 they tried to give characters antennae arms but it just makes sense in a world of cars you’d have a world of robots.

So here’s my idea.  You take our team from the first 2 films and they stumble upon a city populated with robots. Cars are subservient to the robots in this world so they are immediately threatened but also meet people they can become friends with.  This would be a great idea because it would mellow down the humor that everyone hates and introduce a whole new world which Pixar is so good at building.  You could have elements of sci-fi, fantasy and maybe even a war element.  It would still have to appeal to kids so it couldn’t be too dark but most of the kids who loved the first Cars movies are older so I think that could work anyway.

There’s a lot of ways you could go with it but a city of Robots would be great for Cars 3!

ratatouille14Ratatouille 2-

My follow up to Ratatouille would be somewhat similar to Toy Story 3 but there is no way Remy could get by for long without getting trapped by someone.  So he gets trapped and the gang including Linguini and maybe even Ego get involved to rescue him and perhaps they could expose some illegal product testing on animals or something like that along the way.

It would be exciting.  It would be tense and I think the food angle was kind of done to its completion in the first one so you have to go somewhere else.

brave2Brave 2: The Legend of Merida-

This is perhaps the easiest sequel to write because it is basically my pitch for what I wanted in the original movie but didn’t get.  From the trailer and first 15 minutes I was promised an epic legend and what I got was a domestic dispute film.  I want Merida to go on a quest where she has to rescue a neighboring Princess who has been kidnapped for ransom and to try and goad the lands to declare war on each other.

You’d want a character like Malagant from the King Arthur stories who wants conflict and war so that he can gain power.  This is Merida’s villain that she must defeat- another thing desperately needed in the first film.  Merida would use her archery to lead against Malagant and his men and save the Princess.

Seriously how awesome would it be to have a Disney princess saving another Disney Princess? (well, I guess we have that in Frozen but you know what I mean!).

finding nemo10Saving Nemo-

I am aware Finding Dory is already happening but here’s the pitch that I think would be cool.  We’ve already had a story of Nemo, Dory and Marlin looking for something.  We don’t need that again.  Why not have something threaten their coral reef?  There is some kind of toxin or trash that is being released  and Nemo must develop a plan to stop this from happening and keep the ocean clean.

This would be an easy way to involve all our favorite characters from the first film without them doing the same thing.  Crush, Bruce, Nigel, Gil and all the aquarium fish could all be used to send messages and create distractions while they got the message to the humans and the trash was stopped.

I mean if the Finding Nemo team can make a dentist office exciting surely they could make this concept great!

wall-e0Walle 2-

Technically this would be more of a spin off than a sequel.  A lot of people don’t like the science fiction end of Wall-e when they get to the ship.  I disagree strongly with this assessment because I am transfixed with the character of Captain McCrae.  When he looks at the screen and see’s the world he could be living, the life he could be living it is so moving.  He understands for the first time that he could do more than just be satiated.

At the end of the film he rallies the people around the plant and declares to them the start of a new era.  I want to see what that era looks like.  I want to see how McCrae and his team do.  This would be more of a simple film without a huge intense plot but that would be befitting Wall-e and the first film.  We could see their ups and downs, their failures and successes in the first year on the planet.  I would love that! And you certainly could involve our favorite robots and add new one’s that they uncover in the rubble or design themselves.

toy story2-10Toy Story 4-

Again I am aware this is already happening, so this is just for fun.  I think in a new Toy Story movie you could follow the example of the Toy Story Time Forgot and Toy Story of Terror and tell a relatively small story.  In 2 and 3 and a little bit in 1 we got airports and refineries and big set pieces but in these 2 shorts it is basically them getting lost in a hotel and at a friends house.  I think that is the way they should go for 4.  Make it a simple story with minimal involvement from the humans just as in the shorter films.

What I would do is take a page off of Honey I Shrunk the Kids.  Why not have several of them get left out by Bonnie at a campsite.  They then have to navigate bears, lush vegetation, trees, birds etc to get back home.  That way you wouldn’t be dividing up our team which was a problem in 2 and a little bit in 3.  It would be something new they haven’t quite taken on before except for the dogs that have been in the films dealing with animals.  It could also provide moments of heart and even a western vibe which would be perfect for Sheriff Woody!

monsters inc15Monsters Inc 2-

We’ve gotten the prequel for Monsters Inc now let’s get the sequel.  Here’s what I would do- start the film with Boo having grown up and starting a family of her own.  Her little girl starts to complain about being scared at night.  This makes Boo go to Mike and Sully and find out who is doing the scaring instead of the laughing.  Perhaps Monstropolis isn’t the only city that has doors to the human world.  Maybe there is one with more classic monsters like Wolfman, Dracula, Bigfoot etc?

You’ve still got the banter between Mike and Sulley but you could get some of that tension that we had for a lot of Monsters Inc.  You’d also have Boo’s little girl to bring the cuteness back in and a new reason for them to care about the human world.

incredibles9Incredibles 2-

So if Brad Bird was asking me here’s what I would pitch for Incredibles 2 (not that he needs any help from me in that department!).  The Incredibles family is growing up but they start to notice their super powers aren’t as potent as they used to be.  They feel weak and aren’t able to help people as easily as they used too.  Some supers are even dying from premature aging.

Is it something in the water? Something in the air?  They have to investigate to find out.  What they don’t realize is that one of their own is tired of not getting the attention in the press The Incredibles and Frozone get and so he has engineered a way to start removing the powers from his foes, making him look all the stronger.

This would be great because it would require the Parrs to not rely solely on their powers but use their intellects and teamwork to defeat a fellow super (unlike first one where the foe was a normal man with technology).  There certainly would be lots of room to introduce new characters both super and not and would be a great place for Edna to design products that help them when their powers aren’t super strong.

So that is my pitches.  I didn’t have anything great for Bug’s Life or Inside Out but I will keep thinking of them.

What about you?  What do you think of my pitches?  Could you see any of them making decent movies?  What would be your pitch if you got in front of the brain trust for a Pixar property film?  I would love to hear.  Put in the comment section!  And remember this is all in fun so don’t be too hard on my little ideas.
