Oscar Predictions and New Blog Series Poll

86th Annual Academy Awards - Red CarpetHey guys! So the Oscars are coming up next week and so I thought I would share my predictions and what I would pick if it was left up to just me. I don’t plan on watching this year because I think all of the political speeches will be completely insufferable and I don’t think Jimmy Kimmel is funny. I’ll just find out winners online.

Also, I realized I haven’t done a series on this blog for a long time. I was so overwhelmed with my Disney Canon Project over on my youtube channel last year that aside from the monthly blindspot picks I let that slide. I want to make sure to always provide content for both my channel and blog, so I am interested in doing another series. I have a poll so please vote on what you would like me to write about:

Anyway, here are my predictions/picks. Also I warn you I am notoriously awful at this. I have seen almost everything except for no documentary shorts, Elle and a couple docs/foreign films.

  1. Lol. My pick – everything but La La Land. Especially production design, director, actress? Its definitely winning those 3. Dont let yourself have high hopes when we all know Triple L is only losing maybe 4 or 5 trophies oscar night hun.

    1. Interesting that you’re so sure on actress. I’d say score is the other lock. But yeah it’s kind of frustrating. Screenplay is one that will really annoy me. Oh well. It’s just a popularity contest in the end

  2. Sorry that this is unrelated but I have a post suggestion.
PLEASE do a ‘Dreamworks VS Pixar’ post as we debated it at the dinner table today and I was shocked to see my whole family day ‘Dreamworks. I like Shrek and Madagascar as much as the next bloke but really?! There would be no Shrek without Toy Story.
It would be interesting for you to consider both sides as I can see an argument for both (I just think the Pixar case is stronger) 😁

    1. Interesting idea! I definitely am on Pixar side but I could try to be objective and not just be my opinion

  3. You’re welcome.
Been thinking for a while now, and … I might start a Movie blog (as well as my Simpsons/TSTO Blog) because I always have so many opinions, reviews and ideas that I need to get them out 😄.
Still thinking about it but there’s a chance.

On the topic of Oscars …
I agree, La La Land shouldn’t get best screenplay but it does deserve some nominations (best score, maybe?) because it was enjoyable.
Agree with you on Piper for ‘your pick’. It’s so beautiful ❤. Borrowed Time looks good but I haven’t seen it – how do you? It’s not on the internet 😢.
Really hoping for a Moana win for best original score!!
And Production Design should go to Fantastic Beasts and where to find them IMO, too.

    1. Borrowed Time was available online a few months ago but I saw live and animated shorts in theater actually

  4. Wow, you really hate La La Land. Kidding! (but kinda not). I mean if it were up to you it would get nothing. I guess seeing it win all those awards is too much to bear. LOL I know you plan on not watching because of politics, but can you really resist the Academy Awards? I can’t not watch because the Oscars are so much a part of the pop culture zeitgeist. However I really hope the winners remember the award exists to honor the movies.

    1. Yeah often La La Land would be my second choice particularly in score but I love the score in Moonlight. It was haunting and beautiful. Yeah I plan on just following on twitter this year. I just can’t take being preached to all evening by these celebrities who live in their bubble. It’s interesting I’ve noticed a lot of other musical theater buffs like me are not that in love with La La Land. The songs just weren’t memorable to me but it’s fine. It doesn’t deserve the outright hate either. I dont have a problem with it being nomimated. I think Arrival and Fences are worse but those are admirable in many ways.
The Oscars are far too often a popularity contest and not about what is truly best. The La La Land screenplay being nominated is proof of that. I can probably think of 50 movies with better screenplays than La La Land. I also dont think Emma Stone should win. I wish Moana would win song because I think it was much better song but I’m in the minority there. Oh well.
I think what annoys me most of all is people saying the musical is dead and La La Land resurrected it. It shows to these people animation is second tier and not worthy of being considered as real films. How can anyone say that when one of the biggest films of recent memory, Frozen, was a musical? Anyway that really annoys me.

But the hyperbole is separate from the actual film, which is good but I just simply like other films more. It happens. LOL

    2. If you think I’m bad this year you should have seen me in 2014. Birdman is a film I actually hate and found very misogynistic and to see it beat Boyhood made me nuts

  5. Re: the shorts, I see you liked ‘Sing’ and ‘Piper’ the best. I like those choices. Did you write a detailed post regarding the Live-Action and Animated shorts this year? I love that for the past decade it’s much easier for the public to see them now. I posted some brief thoughts about all of the nominees in those 2 categories on my blog. Love to hear your in-depth thoughts about the nominees and my ranking over there. 😉

    1. I will definitely write up my thoughts. Thanks for the reminder. I also like these shorts are being seen more and I think the Academy’s promotion and praise of shorts is one of the best things they do
